The Wandering Emily Carter
Emily Carter was born in Harpford, Devon, on 8th September 1839, the 14th child of Joel Roger CARTER and Mary Hare PAVER, and died (as Emily DUNNE) in North Fitzroy, Melbourne, on 11 June 1917. In the intervening years, she had been married to William Robert YOUNG, a private in the Scots Fusilier Guards and later a Railway Porter, produced 5 children, been widowed in 1877, ran a family tailoring business in Chatham, Kent, and migrated with her children to Tasmania. In Launceston, from late 1885, she was the licensee of the Sportsman's Hall Hotel on the corner of Charles and Balfour Streets. She'd taken over the license from Richard Nashbourne (or Washbourne, or Hashbourne in other reports) ("Mercury", report of 2 February 1886) who, in turn, had obtained the license in about 1882 after the death of Hugh McRudden, husband of Emily's sister Johanna.Emily still held the license in December 1888.
It was in Tasmania that she married Charles Frederick DUNNE in 1894.
We can trace Emily through the Census records from 1841 to 1881. In 1841 and 1851, she is in Harpford on the farm with the family. She married W R YOUNG in the December quarter of 1859 in Marylebone, and in 1861 they are residing at 10 Whitecross Street, Southwark. In 1871, they have moved to 1 Trinity Hill, St Laurence, Kent. 1881 sees her widowed and living with all the children at 127 New Road, Chatham, Kent.
It would appear that she is the Cecily YOUNG, aged 40, on the unassisted passenger list of the "Chimborazo" into Melbourne on 26th October 1881, with all the children except Mary Jane. Maybe a transcription error and a slight fib about her age.
Apart from the 1894 marriage record in Tasmania, she disappears from official documents until the 1909 and 1914 electoral rolls where she and Charles Frederick DUNNE are recorded as residing at 45 Kerr Street, Fitzroy, Melbourne. However, the "Mercury" has some details of her hotel licenses in the 1880s. Charles gives his occupation as tramway employee. In 1919 and 1924, Charles is recorded as residing at 302 St George's Road, Fitzroy North. Charles Frederick DUNNE died on 28th June 1926.
Mary Jane YOUNG was born in 1862 in St Saviour's, and by 1881 has taken the name Mary Jane MURRELL although there appears to be no matching marriage registration in Free BMD. The passenger list of the "Cape Clear" on arrival in Hobart in October 1883 has:

MURRELL W John 35 Middlesex Blacksmith & Boiler Maker.
There has been some shenanigans with age, as she would have been only 21 at the time. Some further research indicates that the entire family, less Mary Jane, arrived in Melbourne in October 1881 as unassisted passengers on the "Chimborazo".
Tasmanian Pioneer records have Mary Jane and William John recorded as being married, in Launceston in 1885. It was after this that they started producing children whose births were registered:

William Robert YOUNG was born in 1863 in Sheerness, Kent. I can find nothing on him in the UK after the 1881 Census, probably because he was on the "Chimborazo" with his mother and siblings. Because there are are other William Robert YOUNG individuals, it is difficult to trace him through the electoral rolls. Tasmanian and Victorian BMD indexes are also not easily accessible.
Emily YOUNG was born in 1867, in Ramsgate, Kent. There is a possible child recorded in Tasmania:

Sydenham YOUNG was born in 1868 in Ramsgate, Kent. We can find references to Sydenham Young (cabman) in the "Mercury" up to about 1910: once for breaking his ribs while controlling runaway horses; twice in the Launceston police court for driving a cab without a licence (fined once, and lied his way out of the other); and once in the Launceston police court for being intoxicated in charge of a cab - case dismissed. He married Martha PARKER in Launceston in 1888, and had 10 children of which many died in childhood. Sydenham enlisted in 1915 at age 47+, spent some time in the Middle East, and returned to Australia in 1916. He was described in the 1919 electoral rolls in Melbourne as "soldier". Martha seems to disappear in the early 1930s.

He died in 1941, in Fitzroy, Victoria. Ruby Estella later married William David MALCOLM, but was buried with Sydenham Joseph Charles after she died in 1955 in Brunswick.

One child, Veneta Emily JORDAN (1922?-1967), married Leslie Roderick SHIELS (1908-1964) in 1937. 15 seems young to be marrying, so the birth date could be wrong.

Vaudrey Geoffrey Cohen YOUNG; 1910-1985, married Dardanella Florence Mena SCOTT in 1936. While there are many women named Dardanella, there is only one Dardanella Florence Mena. In the 1937 Electoral Rolls, she is registered as both Dardanella Florence Mena SCOTT and Dardanella Florence M YOUNG.
William John Murrell died on 21 December 1896 aged 50. Mary Jane remarried, in very short order, to Alexander BROWN (bricklayer) on 28 February 1897 in Launceston. Alexander originated from Banff, Scotland. Three children were born to this couple, a girl and two boys. Ellen was born in Launceston in 1898, Charles David in West Devenport in 1902, and William in Launceston in 1905. The family moved from Launceston to Sandy Bay sometime between 1905 and 1914. Charles David died in 1924, in Sandy Bay. The youngest boy, William, can be traced through the electoral rolls from 1928 to 1949, a baker. There is no other person registered to vote at his addresses, so it can be assumed that he never married.

APPLICATION IN LUNACY. - . In chambers yesterday, before the Acting Chief Justice, Mr. Turner (of Dobson and Mitchell's office) appealed in support of a petition by Emily Young, of Launceston, widow, under the Insane Persons Hospitals Act, praying that the Court would appoint an officer to examine Johanna McRudden, a person of unsound mind, now an inmate of New Norfolk Asylum, and to take such evidence, and obtain such information as should seem necessary to satisfy him whether the said Johanna McRudden is an insane person, and report thereon to the Court. His Honor appointed Mr. Geo. Browne, Judges' Associate, to make the necessary enquiry.
